STROGER ANNOUNCES DEB PETRO WORKDAY HONORING LATE FPD VOLUNTEER

March 5, 2003

Cook County Forest Preserve District Board President John Stroger today announced the establishment of an annual Deb Petro Workday to honor a long-time District volunteer who lost her personal battle with breast cancer.

"Though we mourn the loss of Ms. Petro, one of our most dedicated volunteers, we applaud and seek to keep alive the spirit in which she so eagerly and happily sought to make the District a more ecologically-sound place," said Stroger. "We send our condolences to her family and encourage others to look upon her involvement with the District as a fine example of how one can make such a tremendous and selfless contribution to preserving open space for future generations."

Ms. Petro was a widely-acknowledged, well-respected and ardent supporter of District lands. She was an original founder of the Palos Restoration Project in 1990 and served as a member of President Stroger's FPD Community Advisory Committee for six years. She also served as a Regional Steward for the Palos Restoration Project and a Steward at Cap Sauers Forest Preserve, the largest land management site in the Palos Preserves. A Docent with the Mighty Acorns Program, Ms. Petro was known for her love of nature and of sharing that love with children.

The date and location of the Deb Petro Workday will be established each year by the District, in coooperation with the Palos Restoration Project volunteer stewards.
